Ignorance, The Hood and Music Being Devoid of Color. Meteora & Nevermind (3/9/18)
When I was about 12, I stayed with my cousins in the Bronx every few weekends. My cousin Randal was the coolest dude to me. He’s still pretty cool I’m assuming.Good dude, always treated me good and had a older brother vibe going on. So my interest or rather acceptance of Rock and things closer to that genre of music stems from him.
You see, in the hood there’s some ignorant connotations. Many. Like the term “white music”. Anything that wasn’t like, HipHop, R&B or Jazz. The ignorant children and sometimes adults labeled it white music lol like rock. Nowadays we all know that’s not the case (Age of Information, look it up) but even so. These days, currently I feel like it’s wrong to give music a color. More on that later. But yeah, so when he put me on to the rest of MTV2 after the hiphop I was like, “wow you like this?” The ignorance of the hood had me at 12. So sorry. But he explained to me that it's cool to like different things regardless of if it's popular or viewed as acceptable to the people around you. I came back being more open and being a fan of Linkin Park lol (that "Breaking The Habit video"sold me)
He taught me a lot that summer. And I taught Randal that Inuyasha is a badass with a giant sword that punches any and everybody in the face regularly. We watched a lot of Adult Swim that summer.
So yeah, rock is dope. The sub genres too. But it’s not like white music lol don’t say that ever. Not only is it incorrect but even if it was I feel like it’s limiting the reach, understanding and overall enjoyment of it. That goes for every genre. It’s important to know where things come from, but to like own a genre of music is insane to me. BUT this isn’t like justifying the culture vulture nonsense. The use and abuse of genres like hiphop to gain a quick profit.
So I started writing this like a while ago and then Quincy Jones says this:
"Rock ain't nothing but a white version of rhythm and blues, motherfucker."
Geez. Lol.
Anyways, I still listen to "Meteora". Shoutout to Randall, thank you.
ALSO! During my brother and I 12 or so hour trip to the vacation spot I decided to FINALLY listen to some Nirvana. Look, don't dwell on that part lol. Anyways, I started with that one album everybody knows and loves. I now immensely love it. Those first four or five tracks drew me in and kept me there lol super lit.
